Or - when one 're-gifts' don't do it in front of the "informer". (Now you Bill Cosby fans will get that - the rest of you - go rent "Bill Cosby Himself.")
Now as my day slowly wound down yesterday to it's oh so quiet end... Mom called. Nothing unusual, Mom called to vent... again nothing earth shattering - the topic? Now that boys and girls is where the fun began... First see my first statement and think about that as we weave the tale...
Mom gave her granddaughters a gift, not cheap but requested, hey its for the grand children, K-mart had a sale it's all good. So gift was given at Christmas, received, and accepted with gratitude. Fast forward 3 weeks to yesterday, Nana is visiting the grand children and they are using said Christmas gift. When the informer says that this gift was from her Grandmother (Nana is Mom Grandma is the other side of the family - you know in-laws) when Nana corrected the little informer - she then INFORMED Nana that HER gift (same gift) was re-wrapped and given to another girl... (in-law family friend with a daughter - and someone Nana is not particularly fond of...)
Let me repeat that in small words... the gift that my Mom gave to her Grandchildren was re-wrapped and given to ANOTHER little girl - in front of - and with full knowledge of the 6 year old grand child. Nope - can't make this stuff up... the truth is just to freaking funny - and very very tacky.
Now what can we gain from this tale of classless idiocy? 1) When re-gifting be sure to do so outside of connecting social circle or family members 2) DON'T DO IT IN FRONT OF YOUR 6 YEAR OLD - who will then rat you out make you look like a tacky idiot and 3) don't live outside your means when trying to impress your friends - be who you are it works better in the end.
Now apparently my brother brought out the top hat, tails and tap shoes as he tried in vain to spin and dance a tale that his mother might swallow - after his daughter had spilled the beans upon which he was now dancing. But as that tale was such a whopper of a story - it didn't go down well - and in fact came spewing back to me... and that just took a really gross turn of phrase didn't it? Sorry. Yeah - really sorry. Long story short - Brother tried to sell, Nana didn't buy...
The other turn in our tale of stupid and classless moves was dear old dad, now most times he's the talker-down, the smoother of ruffled family feathers, and generally only blows a gasket when he's off his meds or its really been building... he called me... same topic. Only now he's the one disappointed - and that means a lot. I haven't called home yet to get a next day update but I will and if its as entertaining as this tale - oh you betcha Aunt Ing will be spilling those beans too...
Now I will not claim complete innocence in the re-gifting department - there have been gifts given that simply aren't me or don't work with me - and they manged to find a good home elsewhere... outside the social/family circle in which they were given... and since I don't have a 6-year old informer I don't have that extra bit of something to watch out for... dogs tell no tales but they do other things I don't appreciate...
Today's lesson boys and girls? Re-gifting is a time honored tradition among adults... when it comes to kids gifts - well that is what the gift receipt is for... perhaps I should invest in a copy of Emily Post for my brother and his family - will they get it? ;-)
More tomorrow - post family phone call - and dinner with Bubba... who has been working like a whipped dog but was in a surprisingly good mood this morning... will be searching for the drugs later... stay tuned...
Hmmmm, I think the biggest wrong thing is that the gift was "not cheap but REQUESTED" (my highlights). Who requests a gift and then re-gifts it? If you get two of the same thing. tell the kids that BOTH of their grandmothers got them the gift, and then use the gift receipt! Better yet, give the grandmother's different lists, cuz you KNOW they'll get whatever is requested. Anyway, tell you mom that I feel her pain. And tell Bubba I want some of his drugs... lol
